On February 23, the StreekWaar association opened a new pick-up point in Bennekom for sustainable food from the region. From now on, consumers can order products from local farmers online and pick them up at De Kardoen in the center of Bennekom.
In a fresh spring sun, the Ede alderman Léon Meijer handed over the first crate to a Bennekom resident, who came with her baby. Alderman Meijer: “In addition to my position as alderman for food, I also have youth care in my portfolio. That is why I think it is extremely important that children and young people learn again where their food comes from and that it is healthy and sustainable.” He therefore supports the initiative and supports the idea of making sustainable local products more easily available.
With this new pick-up point, inhabitants from Bennekom can easily obtain sustainable local products. Bernadette Backers from de Kardoen: “We think it is great if more people can eat sustainably and locally. We would like to make room for that in our store.”
Dairy farmer Lodewijk Pool of the organic farm De Hooilanden in the Binnenveld, who is a member of the StreekWaar association, was also present: “We are located in Bennekom ourselves, so we are very happy with the extra local sales. It is also great that we can work together even more as sustainable local producers within StreekWaar.”
A total of 33 members are now affiliated with StreekWaar. They are all producers who do very well in terms of sustainability. For example, no fertilizers and pesticides are used, they are committed to animal welfare and they avoid plastic packaging. Another example: livestock feed is purchased locally to reduce pressure on the Amazon.
StreekWaar consists of, among others, bakers, grain farmers and beer brewers from Wageningen, market gardens from Renkum and producers of mushrooms and microgreens from Ede. The products are available at the Saturday market in Wageningen and via the StreekWaar webshop. If you order online, you can pick up your order at various places, including de Kardoen in Bennekom.
